What Is a CT600?
CT600 is the UK Company Tax Return that limited companies must file with HMRC.
It shows:
- Your company’s income
- Allowable business expenses
- Any reliefs or losses
- How much Corporation Tax is due (or if you’re due a refund)
Think of the CT600 as HMRC’s summary of your year:
"How much did the company make, what can you claim, and what tax is left to pay?"
Even if your company made a loss or didn’t trade much, you may still need to file a CT600 if HMRC has asked for one.
When Do You Need to File a CT600?
You must usually file a CT600 if:
- You run a UK limited company (or certain other corporate bodies), and
- HMRC has sent you a “Notice to deliver a Company Tax Return.”
Key points:
- A CT600 covers your company’s accounting period (for example, 1st January to 31st December).
- The CT600 must be filed within 12 months of the end of that accounting period.
- Corporation Tax itself is normally due 9 months and 1 day after the end of the period.
If you ignore a notice from HMRC and don’t file, you can face:
- Automatic late filing penalties
- Growing fines the longer it’s left
- HMRC estimates of your tax bill (often higher than the real figure)
