VAT doesn’t need to be confusing. At Atex Business Solutions, we help you stay compliant, avoid penalties, and understand exactly what HMRC expects from you - all in plain English.
When VAT applies
(the law in simple terms)
In the UK:
- If your taxable turnover reaches £90,000 in any 12-month period, you must legally register for VAT.
- If you expect to go over £90,000 in the next 30 days alone, you must register immediately.
- You can also voluntarily register even if your turnover is below £90,000 - many businesses do this to appear more established or to reclaim VAT on costs.
- HMRC may allow you to join the Flat Rate Scheme once registered.
- (If you’d like to know more about the Flat Rate Scheme and whether you qualify, just contact us.)
Once registered, you
must follow VAT rules: charge VAT, keep proper records, submit VAT returns digitally (MTD), and pay VAT to HMRC on time.
What Atex will do for you
When you use Atex for VAT, here’s what you can expect:

- Deal with HMRC on your behalf - If HMRC queries your VAT return or asks for evidence, we can speak to them directly for you.
- Explain everything clearly - No jargon. No stress. Just simple steps and straightforward answers.
What we need from you
To keep your VAT accurate and compliant, we’ll need you to:
- Keep your sales, expenses, receipts, and bank records up to date
- Use your bookkeeping software regularly (or let us do it for you)
- Tell us early about any major changes - New income streams, large purchases, new locations, etc.
- Respond quickly when we ask for missing documents or clarification
The better your records, the smoother your VAT returns.
Your legal responsibilities
(even with an accountant)
HMRC requires every VAT-registered business to:
- Keep digital VAT records
- Submit VAT returns on time

If VAT is late or wrong, HMRC can charge:
